The EP, the concept, started as a dream. An idea that lived in my mind for years until I gave it release, until it became music. I’ve always had an affinity for luxury, elegance, class, status and power. All these things feed off of one other, and often it can turn dangerous. I’ve learnt time and time again, that it can only result in self-destruction. It is a perpetual cycle, breaking you down and building you up, that I knew I needed to explore. Not only because it relates directly to the culture cultivated today, but also, as an honest exposé of one of the darker, less comfortable parts of myself that I frequently indulge in.
Pictured on the left is my moodboard, which shows components that influenced the EP. From other artists, to spaces I wrote in, to characters in which I saw myself. This EP is in some way, a world in of itself, which has the potential to DRIVE YOU INSANE.
I decided that for DECADENCE to have any justice, it needed to be considered through as many artistic perspectives as possible. In the same way that I tried to marry different ages of thought regarding indulgence (e.g the sovereignity of the Monarchy over time and self-validation today), I wanted to build this project. For this reason, I decided to launch the EP as a theatrical performance, accompanied with an art exhibition, which sought to re-explore the concepts of the music through other forms of art. This night would be the ultimate indulgence, an immersive experience, totally devoted to it’s own purpose.
On 21 August 2017, DECADENCE was released. It was every single emotion I could possibly think of, beautifully wrapped in velvet and two-tone chiffon, I will never forget it. To every single individual and organisation that was a part of this journey with me, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Without sounding too pretentious, I wanted to push myself as an artist in a way that would make people reconsider their own understanding of what it means, all the while pushing myself into new and unfamiliar territory. I am not just a producer, I am not just a singer, but I am a director, a stylist, a writer, a designer, a visionary. Welcome to the mirror, welcome to AZON.
